3D Shadows to Add Depth to Text Effect
In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we will create a small piece of text and use the Pen Tool to create exact selections and create small custom shadows to transform our gradient text into a 3D ribbon that wraps in and over itself. It’s a cool effect that you’ve just got to see and try for yourself. I hope you enjoy the video!

One of the ways to add dimension and realism to your images is to add a depth of field effect to your images. Depth of field is where you have a part of your image that is completely in focus. Then, anything in front or behind that point in the image is slightly blurred. This tricks the eye into thinking that you are focused on a point in space, and everything else is spatially distorted to the extent where your eye perceives depth. Okay, that was a mouthful, but in plain English, your eye thinks there is depth where there really isn’t any. However, the right amount of blur has to be applied in order for the effect to be realistic. That’s where Photoshop comes in. In the video below, I show you how to use Photoshop to create a depth of field effect. With the right photo, this depth of field effect can have a lot of impact.
Dropshadows add contrast to objects, and add depth to an image. They can increase visibility, and improve readablility. However, if used inappropriately drop shadows will look cheesy.

It may seem a bit counter-intuitive that photographers purposefully create mostly-blurred photographs; however the shallow depth of field effect is actually closer to the way we see with our eyes. As you look at this page, for example, only the text is in focus, while everything else in your vision blurry.
Shadows add facet and meaning to an image. Without shadows the object may appear plain and boring. Lights and shadows establish the correlation of one object to another and their place in the full scene.
Diffuse shadows are a type of box shadow which give the illusion of more depth than a regular drop shadow. This effect is achieved by making the shadow smaller than the source object and offsetting it in the direction of a light source. This tutorial will cover 3 different methods for creating diffuse shadows in Photsohop depending on the situation.
Working with textures can add more depth, life, and uniqueness to almost any design. It’s always fun to use different textures with the many different elements to create more realistic and vivid outcomes. This tutorial will show you a simple way of using a couple of textures to create a painted-on-wood text effect.
